Entrepreneurship often begins with a dream.
Turning that dream into five thriving businesses requires something much greater.
It requires vision, resilience, and a willingness to keep showing up—even when the path isn’t clear.
On this episode of The Franchise Woman Podcast, Komal Kumar shares how she transformed a lifelong passion for eye care into one of Southern California’s fastest-growing Pearle Vision operations.
Her story is one of perseverance, intentional leadership, and believing that success comes from consistently serving both people and purpose.
A Legacy of Entrepreneurship
Komal didn’t discover entrepreneurship later in life.
She was born into it.
Growing up in Myanmar (formerly Burma), she watched her grandfather establish the family’s first optical business before her father expanded it into an innovative optometry practice.
From counting eyeglass frames as a child to learning the importance of customer care, entrepreneurship became part of her identity long before she owned a business herself.
Although eager to join the family business immediately after high school, her parents insisted she first complete a university degree—a decision she now credits with shaping her long-term success.
Starting Over in a New Country
After immigrating to the United States, Komal faced an entirely different business landscape.
Rather than immediately opening her own practice, she intentionally learned every aspect of the industry.
She worked in retail optical, laboratory operations, private practices, and practice management.
Each role became another building block toward entrepreneurship.
Rather than viewing those jobs as delays, she now recognizes them as preparation.
When Franchising Became the Right Path
Komal originally planned to launch an independent optical boutique.
But reality quickly introduced challenges.
Securing commercial space proved difficult.
Insurance relationships were complicated.
Landlords wanted established brands.
Rather than giving up, Komal and her husband explored alternatives and discovered Pearle Vision.
More importantly, they discovered something every entrepreneur needs:
A roadmap.
The franchise model provided systems, credibility, support, and guidance while allowing Komal to pursue her entrepreneurial vision.
Growing Through Adversity
Launching the first Pearle Vision location in California wasn’t easy.
The brand had little recognition in the region.
Then, only a short time after opening, COVID-19 disrupted nearly every business.
Instead of retreating, Komal and her team adapted.
They remained open for emergency eye care, adjusted operations, and continued serving patients safely.
Remarkably, the business grew significantly during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history.
That experience reinforced an important lesson:
Growth often happens during adversity—not despite it.
Scaling Requires a New Mindset
Moving from one location to five wasn’t simply about opening more stores.
It required becoming a different kind of leader.
Komal learned to:
- Delegate responsibilities.
- Trust store managers.
- Develop leaders.
- Build systems.
- Communicate a clear vision.
Rather than solving every problem herself, she invested in people who could lead alongside her.
That transition allowed her business to grow without sacrificing quality.
The Power of Showing Up
Throughout the interview, one phrase appears repeatedly:
“Show up.”
For Komal, showing up means far more than being physically present.
It means showing up during success.
Showing up during setbacks.
Showing up for employees.
Showing up for patients.
Showing up for difficult conversations.
That consistency has become the foundation of her leadership philosophy.
Culture Starts with the Leader
Komal believes exceptional customer experiences begin long before patients enter the building.
They begin with leadership.
She encourages her team to deliver what she describes as:
“Ritz-Carlton customer service with a Disneyland smile.”
That memorable phrase captures the balance she strives for—professional excellence combined with warmth, kindness, and genuine care.
When leaders consistently model those expectations, teams naturally embrace them.
Serving the Franchise Community
Beyond her own business, Komal also serves as Chair of Pearle Vision’s National Franchise Advisory Council.
She mentors prospective franchisees, advocates for current owners, and helps strengthen communication between franchisees and the franchisor.
One aspect of her mentoring stands out.
She doesn’t only share success stories.
She openly discusses the good, the bad, and the difficult realities of business ownership.
That honesty builds trust—and helps future entrepreneurs make informed decisions.
Looking Ahead
With five successful locations already operating, Komal continues pursuing thoughtful expansion through both new development and strategic acquisitions.
Yet even as the business grows, her priorities remain unchanged:
Serve patients exceptionally.
Develop great leaders.
Support franchisees.
Keep showing up.
Final Thoughts
Komal Kumar’s story demonstrates that entrepreneurship isn’t simply about owning businesses.
It’s about building organizations where people thrive.
Her journey—from Myanmar to Southern California, from employee to multi-unit owner, from franchisee to industry leader—is proof that lasting success comes from combining courage with preparation, ambition with humility, and growth with genuine care for people.
For anyone considering franchise ownership or leading a growing organization, Komal’s example offers a powerful reminder:
Success belongs to those who continue to show up.
